EDTA is a commonly used chelator of divalent cations. It inhibits enzyme activity, such as metalloproteases, that require divalent cations for activity. EDTA can also be used to study molecular biology, biochemicals, solutions and reagents, biological buffers, DNA and RNA purification, inorganic salts, essential chemicals and chelators.

The carboxyl groups of EDTA are not dissociated at low pH. Undissociated carboxyls (COOH) have no charge because the hydrogen is covalently bound and therefore acid EDTA is almost insoluble in water.

EDTA Solution Preparation: Mix the EDTA in with about 80 mL of distilled water. Add the NaOH pellets, which should bring the pH of the water up to 8.0, the necessary level to dissolve EDTA. Mix the solution vigorously with the magnetic stirrer until the EDTA dissolves.
